Cleveland went 1-3 in the tournament to begin season.
Lady Wildcats head coach Jenny McCullough was pleased with the team’s progress through the weekend.
“I’m real proud of them,” McCullough said. “I’m proud of how hard they played, and the effort they gave. They all played together, and I think we’re just going to get better and better.”
Friday’s first two games were rough on Cleveland. The Lady Wildcats lost in two straight sets to St. Andrews 25-9 and 25-6 and then lost in two sets to Jackson Academy 25-8 and 25-5.
In Saturday’s first game against Warren Central, the Lady Wildcats showed some improvement as they lost 25-11 in their first set. The 11 points marked the first time Cleveland scored in double-digit points in a set. In the second set, Warren Central cruised 25-4.
Cleveland had one more game left in the tournament, and it was against Vicksburg. This game proved to be an exciting back and forth contest. The first set was a nip and tuck battle through out, but Vicksburg was able to come out on top 25-23 to take a one set lead. Cleveland regrouped and began the second set with a renewed fire. The girls buckled down and played good team ball to win the second set 25-13 to send the game to a third set tiebreaker. The third set saw both teams dig down deep to try to pull out the victory. When the smoke cleared, Cleveland came out on top in the third set 15-10 to secure their first victory in the program’s history.
“There were goals that we set for ourselves through the tournament,” McCullough said. “We wanted to get double-digit points in a set, and we ended up doing that. We did that in the very first match we played this morning. In the match that we won, our goal was to try to get 15 (points) and then our goal was to win a set. Then we decided if we won the set, we might as well win the match and we did. The girls set their goals, and they met their goals.”
CHS will return home on Tuesday to play Yazoo County in a doubleheader to open its Region 3/Class 1 schedule at 4 p.m. at the Margaret Wade Gymnasium.
