The Cleveland West 11-12 All-Stars had a long weekend in Clarksdale for the Dixie Youth Baseball District 1 O Zone Tournament.

The team started play on Friday, but the game was rained out and continued on Saturday where the squad played two other games and spent 13 hours on the field that day. On Sunday Cleveland West played again and finished the tournament on Monday with two games.

When the dust settled and the games were completed the Cleveland West All-Stars stood victorious with the championship in hand.

"I am really proud of this team for the way played and carried themselves this weekend. To lose a game on Sunday and come back and play two games on Monday and win took a lot of perseverance and focus," said Cleveland West head coach Bobby Williamson.

Cleveland started the tourney against Indianola Friday night. The teams were locked in a 2-2 tie when the game was called due to rain. On Saturday, the contest resumed and Cleveland broke the tie and went on to a 9-2 victory. Later that day, Cleveland West took on crosstown foe Cleveland East and made quick work of its hometown opponents with a 20-4 victory. Cleveland then played Washington County in the last game of the evening and took a 10-5 win to remain undefeated in the tournament.

On Sunday, Cleveland West faced Indianola again and on this day the team found itself out of it early as Indianola jumped out in front of Cleveland. Despite trailing the Cleveland team found its focus and battled back, but lost 9-7 for the first lost of the tournament. Cleveland East saw its run in the tournament come to a close on Sunday with a 16-1 loss to Washington County.

"We woke up flat. We made several errors in the game. We were down pretty good against Indianola, but we came back," said Williamson.

The loss on Sunday meant Cleveland West would have to win twice on Monday in order to claim the championship and that is just what it did. Cleveland West defeated Washington County 14-12 and finished off its toughest nemesis Indianola 15-5 for the championship.

"We played really well all tournament. We pitched well and hit the ball well. We had seven guys to hit homeruns in the tournament," said Williamson.

Williamson said that the city of Clarksdale did a fantastic job of hosting the tournament, which was a really good one.

Cleveland West and Cleveland East will now move on to the State O Zone Tournament in Kosciusko beginning on July 19.
