The top ranked Delta State University Statesmen completed their Gulf South Conference three-game sweep over the Shorter Hawks Sunday in baseball action at Ferriss Field.
DSU improved to 27-4-1 overall with a 12-2-1 mark in the conference, while Shorter fell to 12-23 with a 7-9 mark in the GSC.
Michael Manley (5-0) pitched an outstanding game for DSU by giving up just one run on four hits with nine strikeouts and a walk in a nine-inning complete game effort.
Tyler Aldridge led DSU at the plate with two hits and two runs, followed by Sam Kidd with two hits including a double with a run, Ben Kingsley with two hits including a double and a RBI and Carlos Leal with a hit and two RBIs.
DSU will return to the baseball diamond today to play Southern Arkansas at Ferriss Field at 5 p.m.
Lady Statesmen split with Union
The Delta State University Lady Statesmen split a Gulf South Conference softball doubleheader against Union Sunday at University Field.
DSU won the first game 2-1 but lost the second game 4-0. DSU’s record is now 14-22 with an 8-14 mark in the GSC, while Union is now 14-14 with a 9-13 mark in the conference.
In the first game, Kaitlin Moore led the Lady Statesmen at the plate with two hits including a home run.
Miller Maddox (3-4) went the distance in the circle for DSU as she gave up a run on six hits.
In the second game, Brittany Gonzales (7-11) suffered the loss for the Lady Statesmen as she gave up four runs on five hits in 2 2/3 innings of work. Former Cleveland High standout Lauren Kendall tossed 4 1/3 shutout innings in relief for DSU.
DSU will host UA-Monticello in a doubleheader today at University Field. The first game is set for 3 p.m.
