DSU men fall to CBU

The Delta State University Statesmen saw their chances of winning the Gulf South Conference Championship go out the window on Saturday as they lost to the Christian Brothers University Buccaneers 67-64 in the semifinals of the GSC Tournament at the Pete Hanna Center in Birmingham, Ala.

The Buccaneers (18-10) will play in the GSC Title game today at 3:45 p.m., while Delta State (24-6) will wait to see if it earns a berth in the South Region Tournament. The NCAA Division II selection show will be broadcast on the internet at www.ncaa.com at 9:30 p.m. today.

The Statesmen led 38-32 with 17:31 left in the game, but the Buccaneers battled back was able to go on a 13-0 run to take a 45-38 advantage. Delta State had to play catch-up the rest of the way. The Statesmen were able to cut the lead down to one point twice toward the end of the game, but couldn’t pull it out.

After shooting 65.2 percent (15-of-23) in the field in the first half, the Statesmen had a cold second half as they hit only 9-of-28 (32.1 percent) of their shots from the floor in the second half.

Willie Readus led DSU with 27 points and eight rebounds, followed by Cornell Knight with 13 points, Jack Madgen with 11 points and Mike Washington with nine points.

Harry Green led CBU with 18 points, followed by Cory McArthy with 16 points and Trey Casey with 12 points.
