DSU women win NSISC Title

The Delta State University Statesmen and Lady Statesmen had the battle of their lives here at the Delta State Aquatic Center this weekend in the New South Intercollegiate Swim Conference Meet.

When the four-day meet concluded, the Lady Statesmen secured the conference championship, while the Statesmen came in second place. The conference title for the Lady Statesmen was their first since 2002.

The Lady Statesmen scored 942 points, finishing ahead of Henderson State (903), while the Statesmen (858 points) finished 41.5 points behind Missouri S&T (899.5).

Delta State also racked up in the individual awards.

DSU’s Heidi Nichols was the high-point winner in the women’s division, while DSU’s Karl-Richard Hennebach was the high point winner in the men’s division. DSU head swimming coach Dan’l Murray was named NSISC Women’s Coach of the Year.

In the individual events on Friday for DSU, Laura Nichols won the women’s 100-yard breaststroke (1:04.52), and Hennebach won the men’s 100-yard backstroke (48.52). Hennebach’s time set a new pool record. DSU’s relay team consisting of Yvan Nys, Christian Barrett, Matt Williams and Hennebach won the 400-yard medley relay with a time of 3:20.30.

In the individual events on Saturday for DSU, Maria Torres won the women’s 1,650-yard freestyle (17:19.69), Hennebach won the men’s 100-yard freestyle (44.74) and Heidi won the women’s 200-yard breaststroke (2:21.35).

Delta State’s next meet will be the NCAA Division II National Swimming Championships in Birmingham, Ala. beginning Mar. 13.
