DSU women’s swim team moves to No. 1

The Delta State University women’s swim team rose to the top of the rankings as they came in at No. 1 in the CollegeSwimming.com Top 50 Poll released on Wednesday.

Delta State was ranked No. 5 in the previous poll. The Lady Statesmen were able to move up four spots after winning the DSU Christmas Invitational with 898.5 points edging out Lindenwood University (833.5 points). Lindenwood came in eighth in this week’s poll. Other teams that currently nationally ranked the participated in the Christmas meet were Limestone (No. 21) and West Florida (No. 22).

The Lady Statesmen have gotten a lot of fast times from their individual swimmers with many of them ranking among the top 20 in the nation this year.

Freshman Anastasia Klyarovskaya has the fastest time in the 200-yard backstroke (1:56.44); the second fastest time in the 100-yard backstroke (54.52), the seventh fastest time in the 100-yard butterfly (56.12) and the eighth fastest time in the 200-yard butterfly (2:03.88).

Freshman Melanie Tombers has posted the fastest time in the 400-yard individual medley (4:19.72), the second fastest time in 500-yard freestyle (4:52.06) and the fifth fastest time in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:16.95)l the fifth fastest time in the 200-yard individual medley (2:04.06).

Freshman Kim Barna has turned in the fifth fastest time in the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:14.64), and senior Maria Torres has the sixth fastest time in the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:19.78) and the 18th fastest time in the 1,650-yard freestyle (17:24.81);

Junior Dani Meerholz has posted the seventh fastest time in the 500-yard freestyle (4:55.49) the 11th fastest time in the 1,650-yard freestyle (17:14.80) and the 12th fastest time in the 200-yard freestyle (1:51.70).

Freshman Kirsten Page has turned in the ninth fastest time in the 400-yard individual medley (4:25.62); the 12th fastest time in the 500-yard freestyle (4:58.55) and the 18th fastest time in the 200-yard individual medley (2:06.08), and sophomore Danielle Dugas has posted the eighth fastest time in the 100-yard butterfly (56.14).

The DSU relay teams have posted the fastest time in the 200-yard medley relay race (1:44.04); the second fastest time in the 800-yard freestyle relay; the sixth fastest time in the 400-yard medley race (3:48.69); the 10th fastest time in the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:35.67) and the 14th fastest time in the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:30.27).

On the men’s side, the Statesmen are ranked 14th in the nation. In Division II this year for DSU, junior Yvan Nys has posted the fifth fastest time in the 200-yard backstroke (1:46.23) and the 12th fastest time in the 100-yard backstroke (49.20); sophomore Vlad Zinca has posted the fifth fastest time in the 200-yard butterfly (1:48.69) and the eighth fastest time in 100-yard butterfly (48.62); sophomore Bryce Anderson has posted the 10th fastest time in the 1,000-yard freestyle (9:26.13) and the 20th fastest time in the 1,650-yard freestyle (15:56.26) and freshman Fabrice Wendel has turned in the 20th fastest time in the 100-yard backstroke (50.05).

DSU has also posted the seventh fastest time in the 400-yard medley relay (3:18.20); the ninth fastest time in the 200-yard medley relay (1:31.30); the 11th fastest time in the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:22.20) and the 12th fastest time in the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:02.37).
