Visitation will be from 10-11 a.m. on Tuesday, October 30, 2012, at First Presbyterian Church in Cleveland.
Services will immediately follow at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Michael McLaughlin and the Rev. Sid Harmon officiating. Interment will be at 4:30 p.m. on October 30 at the Rose Hill Cemetery in Brookhaven.
Mrs. Franklin was born in Brookhaven on August 24, 1920, to S. Benton Cain and Eddie Estelle Thompson Cain. On May 9, 1942, she married Ralph W. Franklin, who was band director at Copiah-Lincoln College in Brookhaven and later at Delta State University.
Mrs. Franklin worked for 50 years as a teacher in music education at the college and grammar school level. In 1949 she founded the Collettes, a dancing team for Copiah-Lincoln, which pioneered in half-time show band performances throughout Mississippi and the United States. In 1975 she founded a similar dancing group, the Delta Belles, which also performed throughout the nation with the Delta State Marching Band.
In 1975, Mrs. Franklin was inducted into the Delta State University Hall of Fame, and in 2009 she was presented with the Delta State University Legacy Award. She was a recipient of the Copiah-Lincoln College Alumni Award in 2006.
She is preceded in death by her parents, S. Benton Cain and Eddie Estelle Thompson Cain, and her husband, Ralph W. Franklin.
Mrs. Franklin is survived by her sons, Bishop R. William Franklin (Carmela) of Buffalo, N.Y., James Benton Franklin (Cindy) of Crystal Springs and Robert F. Franklin (Dora) of Orlando, Fla.; grandchildren, Travis Franklin, Corinna Franklin, Shelly Franklin and Beatrice Franklin; sister, Janice Boyd of Dothan, Ala.; and brother, Benton Edmund Cain of Jackson.
Pallbearers will be Patrick Johnson, Peter Walker, Dr. David Walt, Alton Vance, Rogers Varner and John Cassibry.
In honor of Mrs. Franklin, memorials may be made to the Dorothy C. Franklin Memorial Music Scholarship at Delta State University, through the Alumni and Friends Office of Delta State University, P.O. Box 3141, DSU, MS 38733.
