This summer Eurica Pointer of Drew received a phone call from McDonald's telling her she had won a trip to the 2013 Allstate? Tom Joyner Family Reunion. However, she was a bit skeptical.

Pointer entered the contest at her local McDonald's restaurant in Cleveland. McDonald's restaurants in the Mississippi Delta sponsor the annual sweepstakes, and the winner receives tickets and spending money for radio host Tom Joyner's annual Labor Day family event held in Orlando.

"When McDonald's called, I couldn't believe it," Pointer said. "I was overwhelmed. I even thought it was a prank!"

Once she spoke with the restaurant manager and he verified it, she knew it was real. Soon after, she was off to Florida on her first plane trip.

Joining her were her two daughters, Taniyalynn, 24, and Canarius, 19, and son Tyler, 18.

Pointer, a positive behavior instructional interventionist assistant at Ruleville Central Elementary School, also received $1,500 spending money to use during the trip.

Now in its 11th year, the Family Reunion features nationally syndicated radio host Tom Joyner and brings over 12,000 families to enjoy five days of entertainment, seminars and celebrities during Labor Day weekend.

The event is held at the Gaylord Palms Resort & Convention Center in Kissimmee, Fla.

"The resort was one of the most beautiful places I've ever been," Pointer commented. "I can't even describe it ? it was huge!"

During their time there, her family enjoyed wonderful meals, informative seminars, concerts and a Sunday gospel performance featuring James Fortune and Kurt Carr, which Pointer said she especially enjoyed.

She also had the opportunity to observe Tom Joyner as he produced his live morning show, and she was able to actually meet the radio personality. In addition, her family enjoyed outings to Sea World and Universal Studios.

"The kids enjoyed the swimming pool and the amusement parks," she added. "I enjoyed the concert by R&B singer-songwriter Anthony Hamilton."

Pointer also enjoyed the friendship of the other people at the event.

The Tom Joyner Family Reunion is all about bringing families together, and Pointer's family did just that.

"My favorite thing was being able to spend time with my kids," she said. "(The trip) came at just the right time."

"The trip was awesome!" added Pointer. "I can't thank McDonald's enough for the opportunity to experience something like that. My kids and I will cherish this forever!"

Greenwood-Greenville-Grenada McDonald’s Cooperative President Mike Retzer of Greenville commented on the contest.

“We are pleased to have our Tom Joyner Family Reunion winners use this time to strengthen their family relationships, and we’re equally pleased that they had an entertaining time at the Reunion."

Mississippi Delta McDonald’s restaurants are located in Belzoni, Charleston, Clarksdale, Cleveland, Greenville, Greenwood, Grenada, Indianola, Marks and Winona.

The Family Reunion Contest was also held in central Mississippi.
