Lady Colts down Stars, improve to 17-3

The Bayou Academy Lady Colts improved to 17-3 with a 3-0 mark in District 1-AA Monday with a strong showing against the Winona Christian School Lady Stars.

The Lady Colts fell behind 3-2 in the top of the fourth, but rallied and scored six runs in the bottom of the fourth to take an 8-3 lead. The Lady Colts never looked back as they finished off the Lady Stars 13-3.

"We've been struggling with errors and today was a bit of a stepping stone to getting better,” Bayou head coach Lauren LaSuzzo said. “Our bats came alive today and so we just want to keep getting better everyday.”

The Lady Colts jumped out on the Lady Stars 2-0. In the top of the fourth, Winona managed to load the bases and a bases loaded walk gave Winona its first run of the day for a 2-1 ball game. Winona followed with a base hit to tie the game at 2-2 and another hit from the Lady Stars, which fell just short of Ashley Vickers’s outstretched glove which allowed one more run to be scored which gave Winona a 3-2 lead.

The Lady Colts found their hitting groove in the bottom half of the fourth as Shelby Newsom led off with a single and later advanced to second off a wild pitch. Taylor Newton followed with a single, and Ana Parker Davis laid down a bunt single. Off the bunt, Newsom advanced to third and was able to score off a bad throw to tie the game at 3-3.

A single from Kailyn Lofton and a bunt single from Taylor Ann Bailey loaded the bases for Bayou. Peden, then socked a base hit to drive in a run for a 4-3 lead and Tubbs followed with a double that drove in three runs to give the Lady Colts a 7-3 lead. Chrissy Tubbs advanced to third off a bad throw and later scored off a wild pitch to give Bayou an 8-3 lead.

The Lady Colts added three runs in the bottom of the fifth as Peden socked a double that brought in two runs and Tubbs had a single that drove in a run to give Bayou an 11-3 lead.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Lady Colts ended the contest off the 10-run rule as Davis and Lofton each drilled RBI singles for a 13-3 score.

Vickers picked up the win in the circle for Bayou. Chrissy Tubbs led the Lady Colts at the plate by going 2-for-4 with a double and three RBI. Vickers went 2-for-4 with two doubles and two RBIs, Peden went 2-for-4 with three RBIs, Lofton drove in two runs and Davis drove in a run to round out Bayou’s offense.

The Lady Colts will be back in action tonight at 6:30 p.m. in Batesville against North Delta.
