NFL player Ken Lucas and his family visited with and brought Christmas gifts to the residents of the Rainbow Shelter on Christmas Eve.

Lucas said he has wanted to give back to his home community for some time.

"Throughout the time I was playing I never really had time to come back and do the things I wanted to do," said Lucas.

"Another one of my issues was that I was very, very shy to do things like this … you, know, to put my face in front of people. I always did things behind the scenes. I just did it through other people. I didn't know how.

"Now that I have had some time to relax and enjoy life, one of the things I wanted to do was be a motivational speaker. In order to do that, you have to be able to get in front of people.

"This is one of the reasons why I wanted to put my feet on the ground and be hands-on instead of hide behind other people doing it also to show people that you do have somebody from this area that sat in the same chairs or came from the same chairs or community that had a chance in life to go out and see some of the things of this world and be able to come back and bring it back," said Lucas.

"And that's one of the issues with a lot of people who have had some level of success in Mississippi. We all can be successful in our own rights but we'll go away and never come back and bring those resources back home."

Lucas commented that education and knowledge is very important.

"I want to educate my town, my people on what to do and not to do. It's all about planting a seed into people about life. This is part of it.

"I'm a blessed child. God has blessed me by giving me the opportunity to do some of the things I want to do in life. I'm just paying my dues, paying it forward to the people who sacrificed for me growing up and I'm just giving it back to them," said Lucas, who added when he was young he never questioned how his parents managed to provide him with things.

"We wanted to give back to the less fortunate, the people who may not have the Merry Christmas as a lot of us will have. You don't realize how good you have it until you pull your eyes back and look at somebody else's life situation and realize maybe your life is not as bad as you think it is or thought it was.

"When you are able to do that then you can realize how blessed we really are as people to be able to get up and breathe and know you have another opportunity to get up and try to make a better life for yourself. That's one of the greatest joys in the world — to be able to do the small things that put smiles on people's faces."
