Mattie Carolyn Allison Cousin, the daughter of William and Celia Griffin Allison, was born November 21, 1912, in Aberdeen, Monroe County. She accepted Christ at an early age at First Baptist Church. After First Baptist church was destroyed by a storm, her family was very instrumental in building Pilgrim Rest Missionary Baptist Church, where she continued to serve actively. She was the last member of the original Pilgrim Rest family.
She received her education from Aberdeen Colored High School and was a member of its first graduating class in May of 1929. She continued her education at Rust College in Holly Springs, receiving her bachelor of science degree in elementary education. She later received her master's degree in administration from Jackson State College in Jackson in 1970. She was a retired teacher and principal after 40 plus years of service in the Aberdeen School District.
She is survived by one daughter, Carolyn C. Lucas; one son-in-law, Maurice F. Lucas Sr.; one grandson and his wife, Maurice Jr. and Candice Lucas; and a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews, cousins, and friends.
