Mr. Ramon C. “Buzzy” Nokes, 84, of Cleveland died Friday, March 29, 2013, at North Sunflower Medical Center in Ruleville.

Visitation was from 1-3 p.m. Monday, April 1, 2013, at Ray Funeral Home in Cleveland.

Graveside service were held at 4 p.m. in the McNutt Cemetery in Schlater with Rev. Floyd Cooper officiating.

Buzzy was born August 24, 1928, to Herman Nokes and Patty Netherland Nokes. He married Maxine Smith on September 21, 1946, in Schlater. Buzzy was known for his love of nature, his prolific gardening skills, and the generous sharing of his harvest. In addition, his keen knowledge of all creatures great and small found in the woods of Bolivar County, was envied by professionals who sought his assistance on many occasions. Buzzy’s life was fullest when he shared his love of hunting and fishing with his grandsons. His legacy lives on. His strong, character, kind and gentle demeanor and his ever-charming smile live on in our hearts.

He retired form Delta and Pine Land Company in 1993 and also served in the U.S. Marines. He was a member of the Benoit Union Church. 

He is preceded in death by his parents, Herman Nokes and Patty Nokes; wife, Maxine Smith Nokes to whom he was married for 60 years; and siblings, Richard Nokes, Morris Nokes and Martha Weeks.

Buzzy is survived by his daughters, Ramona Nokes Rizzo (Phillip) of Cleveland and Connie Rhodes (Richard) of Cruger; grandchildren, Phil Rizzo (Mary) of Cleveland, Paul Rizzo (Brooks) of Cleveland and Richard Rhodes Jr. of Gunnison; and great-grandchildren, Katy Rizzo, Claire Rizzo, Rian Rizzo and Rance Rizzo.

Pallbearers were Phil Rizzo, Paul Rizzo, Richard Rhodes Jr., Wesley Nokes, Joe Nokes, William Nokes, Jimmy Haney and B.W. “Repete” King Jr.

Honorary pallbearers were Bert Mann, James Allen Herbison, James Goodwin and John Pope.
