East Side overcomes slow start

The East Side Trojans came out the gate slow Friday against the North Panola Cougars and got behind 24-0, but rebounded for a 57-38 victory.

"We came out so flat and they made us pay for it," said Kendrick Woodard, East Side Head Coach.

The Trojans regrouped to tie the game in the second quarter scoring 24 unanswered points for a 24-24 ball game at halftime.

In the third quarter the Cougars scored 14 points to the Trojans six to take a 38-30 lead going into the fourth.

Unfortunately for the Cougars the fourth quarter was all East Side as the Trojans scored 27 unanswered points for a 57-38 win.

Taquille Eatmon led the Trojans offense with 171 yards on 14 carries with four touchdowns, Jalen Thomas had 136 yards on 16 carries with three touchdowns and completed 3-of-8 passes for 50 yards and a touchdown. Perry Henry had a 27-yard touchdown catch and 37 yards on two carries. Quadre Butler finished with 64 yards on 17 carries.

Eatmon had eight tackles on defense, Butler finished with four tackles with two sacks, Lakyle Thomas had seven tackles and Barron Burns was also a major factor on defense and offense for the Trojans according to Woodard.

The Trojans will now host Louisville in the third round in Cleveland. Louisville will enter Friday's game with a 13-0 record and coming off a 57-26 win over Water Valley in the second round.

4A State Playoffs

Wildcats blowout Byhalia

The Cleveland High Wildcats traveled to Byhalia Friday night and dominated the Indians for a 55-21 victory in the second round of the 4A State Playoffs.

The Wildcats led the Indians 35-13 at halftime.

With the win the Wildcats have improved to 8-5 on the season and will now host Rosa Fort in the third round at 7 p.m. Friday at Parks Field-Mickey Sellers Stadium. Rosa Fort is coming off a 33-15 win over Kosciusko.

“I think our offensive line blocked well and we took advantage of them with three passes for touchdowns," Cleveland High head coach Kelly Causey said.

"Coach Lance Canoy’s offense did a good job of taking advantage of what the defense gave them. Defensively, we had a solid performance and we’ve really gelled on defense the last couple of weeks.”

Andonte Maxie rushed for 157 yards with a rushing touchdown on 18 carries and had two catches for 20 yards and a score. Earnest Butler had 71 yards on 11 carries, with one touchdown and one catch for a 15-yard touchdown. Vaughnte Dorsey had a rushing touchdown and completed 4-of-5 passes for 80 yards with three touchdowns. Orlando Burns had a touchdown run and Trace Edwards was 7-of-7 on PAT kicks.

On defense, Larry Douglas returned an interception 35 yards for a touchdown. Dillon Norwood also had a great game on defense.

1A State Playoffs

Smithville edges out Shaw

The Smithville Seminoles held the Shaw Hawks scoreless in the second half Friday of the first round of the 1A State Playoffs to take a 22-20 lead.

Shaw led the Seminoles 20-8 at halftime. With the loss the Hawks finished the season 7-5.

Andre Pruitt led the Hawks on offense completing 4-of-10 passes for 57 yards and rushing for 133 yards on 15 carries with one touchdown. Reggie Scott had 87 yards on 16 carries with two touchdowns.

Lerandell Allen led the Hawks defense with 14 tackles, Justin King had 13 tackles and Jerris Westmoreland finished with seven tackles with a sack.
