Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, January 12, 2013, at United Baptist Church with Brother James Hadley officiating. Burial will follow in Westlawn Cemetery in Cleveland.
Visitation will be from 1-5 p.m. Friday, January 11, 2013, at Brinson Funeral Home in Cleveland with family hour following from 6-7 p.m.
Mrs. Martin was born on October 12, 1929, to Odessa Thompson Vaughn. She accepted Christ at an early age and was added to the Church of Christ in Ruleville. She married Willie Lee Martin in 1953. She attended public school in Sunflower County and worked for several years doing domestic work in Bolivar and Sunflower counties. She began employment with Bolivar County Head Start in 1965 in Cleveland.
While working there as a paraprofessional social work, she earned her GED. She then went to work in medical records at Tufts Medical Center, now Delta Community Health Center, in Mound Bayou. While working there, she enrolled in the nursing program at Coahoma Junior College. After earning her LPN, she began working at the Taborian Hospital in Mound Bayou. She was later employed at Bolivar Medical Center in OB. She did her last 10 years of formal employment at the Mississippi Department of Corrections at the Parchman Hospital.
After retirement she began working part-time at Bolivar Medical Center. She also tutored in reading at B.L. Bell Elementary in Boyle.
She is preceded in death by a son-in-law, Ferrill Grimes of Cleveland; sisters, Betty Marsaw of Chicago, Ill., and Vivian Killingsworth of Ruleville; and brothers, Roy, Bill, Opra and Andy Vaughn
Survivors include, daughters, Louise (John) Brummer of St. Louis, Mo., Bobbie (Herbert) Marsaw of Chicago, Ill., Shirley Grimes of Cleveland, Ora (Garland) Jackson of Boyle and Audrey (Dennis) Davis of Riverdale, Ga.; sons, William Wendell (Roberta, fiancée) Martin of Gulfport and Floyd (Josette) Martin of Boyle; 19 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren; sisters, Doretha (Clyde) Martin, Juanita (Leon) Halbert, and Bernice (Oscar) Ross, all of Chicago, Ill.; brother, Stanley Vaughn of Renova; and a host of great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and friends.
