Rosalie Vetrano “Rosie” Bucy, 103, died at her Birmingham Ridge home on Monday, April 22, 2013.

She was born on December 27, 1909, to Italian immigrant parents, Joseph Antonio and Emilia Costanzi  Vetrano. She was the oldest of seven children. She was raised in the Mississippi Delta living in Lobdell and then Rosedale. She graduated from what was then Delta State Teachers College in 1932 and was the oldest living graduate at the time of her death. She was a member of the first freshman class to complete their degree at Delta State.

She married Jim Bucy and moved to the Bucy Garden Community in Saltillo in 1934. She was widowed in 1945 leaving her with two young children. She helped run the Bucy Brothers Gin and kept the family farm in operation until it was taken over by her son in 1959. She taught Business and Public School Music at Saltillo and Belden. She left teaching and went to work for the Lee County Welfare Department and later for the Mississippi Department of Welfare until her retirement. She was the organist for St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church in Saltillo for many years.

She is survived by a son Jimmy Bucy; a daughter Anita Joe Bucy Long; four grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; two sisters, Mary Vetrano Moss and Asterina Vetrano Carter; one brother Ernest Vetrano; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband Jim Bucy; her parents Tony and Emilia Vetrano; two brothers Buddy Vetrano and Joe Vetrano, and one sister Anita Vetrano.

Pallbearers will be her nephews, Woe Vetrano, Bill Vetrano, Charlie Stanley, Jeff McCord, Mike Sanders, and special friends, Dan Franklin, Neal Clement, Malcolm Blissard, Michael Norris and Paul Anglin.

Honorary pallbearers will be nephews, Tony Vetrano, Lester Robinson, Mike Kenney, John Kenney, Rick Hudson, Buddy Stanley, Carter Stanley, and special friends, Dr. Rud Robison, David Irwin, and her friends from Bridge Club.

A Rosary Service will be held at 7:30 p.m., today in the Tupelo Chapel of Holland Funeral Directors with visitation from 4:30 p.m. to service time.

Mass will be recited at 1 p.m., Thursday, April 25, 2013 at St. James Catholic Church with Father Lincoln Dall and Father Henry Shelton officiating. Burial will follow in the Bucy Family Plot at Saltillo Cemetery.
