The Cleveland High School Lady Wildcats stayed alive in the 4A North Half Playoffs as they defeated the Leake Central Lady Gators 50-47 in first round action at Carthage Monday night.

Cleveland improved to 19-12 and will play Ripley in the quarterfinals of the 4A North Half Playoffs at Itawamba High School in Fulton at 5:30 p.m.

Leake Central led 22-14 at halftime, but CHS battled back to outscore Leake Central 36-25 in the second half. McKinnon Skeen scored 21 points to lead the Lady Wildcats.

“ “In the first half, they were a little bit nervous,” Cleveland High head coach Jenny McCullough said. “McKinnon (Skeen) kept all of them calm and talked to them at the half. She was really the calming force. You start three sophomores, and they’re a little bit nervous. McKinnon did such a good job of being a leader. Once they were calmed down a little bit, we outscored them in the second half.

“Also, if it weren’t for God’s grace and strength, we would not be where we are,” McCullough added. “If He sees fit for us to win that’s good, and if he doesn’t then we still give him glory.”

Taylor Collins added nine points, while Katelyn Thompson pulled down a team-high 15 rebounds.
