As the heat of summer subsides, the Delta comes alive as hunters’ emotions begin to heat up.

In March 2006 Drew became the "Waterfowl Capital of Mississippi" – a title that residents in the small Delta community take very seriously.

In fact, so much so that the community came together a few years ago and began the annual Delta Wings Festival to celebrate the abundant natural resources and wildlife in the area.

Beginning on Saturday at 9 a.m., the community will host the annual event at gazebo in downtown Drew.

“Since the beginning the Delta Wings Festival has continued to grow in attendance every year.” said Jeffrey Andrews, one of many festival organizers. “It is an opportunity to bring the family out and enjoy the fall weather. While there, one can learn new duck hunting techniques, see the season’s new gear and taste a variety of southern cooked duck dishes.”

This year's festival will consist of vendors, children’s activities, live music by Delta Rain, duck calling contests, a duck gumbo cook-off, retriever shows and a silent auction.

Andrews said one of the event's specialties is the $1,000 duck-gumbo cook-off.

“We usually have close to 15 teams entered in the duck gumbo cooking contest with $1,000 given to the first place team, $500 for second place, $250 for third place and $250 for the Best Decorated Booth,” said Andrews. "We are still taking entries and would love to have more teams come and compete."

There will be four duck calling competitions this year — the Mississippi State Duck Calling Championship, the Mississippi Delta Regional Duck Calling Championship, a two-man team duck calling competition and the Mississippi State Youth Duck Calling Competition.

Andrews said cash and other prizes would be awarded to the winners of each group.

In addition to the prizes awarded at the festivals, winners of the state Duck Calling Championship and the Delta Regional Duck Calling Championship will qualify for the World Championship Duck Calling Contest in Stuttgart, Ark.
