In a time when mega-salons are opening the doors on every street corner of cities across the nation, Cleveland has maintained a number of independent, locally owned shops that offer a unique approach to cutting hair.

For over two decades Ann Garner has been providing women of the Delta with an invaluable service — making them look beautiful.

"I decided right after I got out of school that cutting hair was what I wanted to do and I jumped right in," said Garner. "It is still what I want to do and for the past 22 years I have been cutting hair at The Beauty Nest."

While she said that she enjoyed the years that she spent working there and appreciates each and every one of her customers, recently Garner began having a different dream.

"I wanted to take a shot and open my own business," said Garner from the leather couch that welcomes customers into her new business.

Earlier this week Garner and her staff opened their doors to the public as Head Hunters Salon, located at 1413 Miss. Highway 8 West in Cleveland. By doing so they have joined a thriving cohort of local beauty salons committed to providing individual attention and good, fun company.

Staffing the salon with Garner are Melissa Rocconi, who worked at Special Effects for 11 years, and Lillie Holcomb.

"Lillie is our little high fashioned gypsy because she has worked almost everywhere," said Garner with a chuckle.

Everyone in the hair salon business knows that the most important thing is customer satisfaction.

"We are here to give the customer what they want," said Garner. "And, we have the capability and skill to serve men, women and children."

Garner doesn't stop with customer satisfaction alone. She and her staff are also committed to honing their talents through various methods and techniques.

"We do a lot of training in the field by attending various hair shows and talking with other stylist about techniques and styles that are working well for them," Garner continued. "We look at it as a way of keeping up with current trends, equipment and techniques."

While appointments are encouraged, walk-ins are welcomed.

"We have been extremely busy these first couple of days, especially with the walk-in customers," Garner concluded. "But we welcome anyone to stop in and see us."
