These are the lyrics to one of my favorite songs and I love singing it because it reminds me that we all have a past, but in Christ all things are made new especially us.
Like me, most of you struggle with or have struggle with your personal histories. We live with regrets wishing we could go back and change things in our past.
The things that haunt us keep us from truly moving forward because we refuse to get over it. We refuse to let it go.
In the book of Joshua, God was ready for Israel to go into their land of promise. However, they were too busy mourning over Moses. So, He sent His word to Joshua for he and the people to arise; that is, get over it.
"Moses my servant is dead; now therefore arise, go over this Jordan, thou, and all this people, unto the land which I do give to them, even to the children of Israel. Josh 1:2."
In my life there was a time when I feared being hurt, rejected and humiliated. I had to learn that those things are apart of life and they come to help us become stronger.
"Do not [earnestly] remember the former things; neither consider the things of old. Behold, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs forth; do you not perceive and know it and will you not give heed to it? I will even make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert." (Isaiah 43: 18-19).
I had to learn that God does not want us to be backward looking, going through life looking in the rear view mirror. He wants us to press forward constantly. Despite what he wants for us, many of us can’t help ourselves. We think about our past hurts or past mistakes and we allow those things to eclipse our mind and keep us from seeing ourselves moving forward.
It’s time now to look ahead and focus on what’s before us. God wants to do a new thing in our lives. He wants us to rise up to our full potential in Him. He has called us to do mighty things. He will even make a way when we feel lost, and refresh us when we’re burning in the heat.
We have got to keep on moving forward. It’s only in moving forward that we ever accomplish what God has called us too. We can’t stay where we’re at, nor can we go backwards. The only direction we can go is forward. Yes, it can be hard – but it’s the only way if we want to move on in God and grow.
Keep the faith and stay encouraged. M.J.T. Love.
