David Midlick began his stint as coach of the Delta State University Lady Statesmen on the right foot here Monday night at the Walter Sillers Coliseum.

The Lady Statesmen didn’t have much trouble as they disposed of the Selma University Lady Bulldogs 99-37 to open their basketball season. The 99 points were the highest total DSU has had in a game since Jan. 3, 2011 when DSU defeated Lambuth 100-57.

The Lady Statesmen (1-0) scored eight unanswered points to start the game and never looked back. At halftime, DSU had a commanding 51-18 lead and just kept adding on in the second half.

The Lady Bulldogs were held to just 19 percent (11-of-58) shooting from the floor, while the Lady Statesmen shot 45.3 percent (34-of-75) in the field. DSU also out rebounded Selma 73-35. A total of 10 players for DSU played at least 13 minutes with each of those players scoring at least two points each.

Freshman guard Chelsey Rhodes led the Lady Statesmen with 17 points, five steals and four assists, followed by freshman guard Juqecia Chancey with 16 points, freshman center Becca Ruckes with 16 points and 15 rebounds, sophomore center Seneca Walton with 13 points and six rebounds, senior guard Brittany Roberts with 12 points, six rebounds and three assists, sophomore guard Rhandi Ball with seven points, six rebounds and five assists, junior guard Brooke Rhodes with seven points, five rebounds and two steals and freshman forward Ashley Brown with five points and nine rebounds.

Crystal Turk and Mercedes Scott led the Lady Bulldogs (0-1) with 11 points each.

Delta State will return to the basketball court on Friday when the team hits the road to Jackson, Tenn. to play No. 10 Clayton State University in the Union University Classic at 5 p.m.
