The Mississippi High School Activities Association announced the reclassifications for state sports for the next two years Friday.

The shake up in this term will only affect the schools in North Bolivar County as both Broad Street and John F. Kennedy High Schools fell from 2A down to 1A.

The drop for the Jaguars and the Hornets is familiar territory as they played in the 1A class in the mid-2000s.

For football, the Region 2-1A will now include: Broad Street, Durant, JFK, McAdams, Montgomery County, Ray Brooks, Shaw, St. Aloysius and St. Joseph—Greenville.

In other sports, the Region will be Region 3-1A and include: Broad Street, Coldwater, JFK, Ray Brooks, Shaw and St. Joe.

"I think this move is good for us because we don't have the students to compete with the bigger schools,” said Karshae Peterson, Athletic Coordinator and Head Boys Basketball Coach at Broad Street High School.

“We have been at 1A before so we understand how to navigate through this change. The only thing that will be different for us is all the traveling, especially with football. We are used to playing right around here when it comes to district play, but now we will have to get on the road a little more.”

John F. Kennedy athletic director and head football coach Sheldon Hodge said being back at 1A is something the athletic teams at JFK will need to accustomed to again.

"We are just going to have to get ourselves together to get to know how these teams like to play,” Hodge said. “We are unfamiliar with some of these schools so the best way for us to get ready for next season is to learn all we can about our opponents.

Hodge said scheduling will be tough, especially in football.

"In football, our thing will be finding schools to schedule that will travel well because we won't be able to schedule as many non conference games,” Hodge said. “We use football to raise the money we need to take care of track, cross country and baseball. So, in the next week, I will be looking to find schools to play that will really help with that.”

In the 2A ranks. the Leland Cubs dropped from 3A to 2A and will compete in Region 3-2A with West Bolivar, J.Z. George, Hollandale-Simmons, Riverside and South Delta.

The East Side Trojans will have some new guest to Region 3-3A as Humphreys County moved down from 4A and O'Bannon moved up from 2A. Other teams in Region 3-3A will include: Ruleville, J.J. McClain and Leflore County.

Cleveland High School will remain in Region 3-4A will have be joined in its region by Amanda Elzy, Gentry, Greenwood, Yazoo City and Yazoo County.
