Summer and winter battled for center stage in this yard on Rosemary Drive earlier this week as two beds of red roses bloomed among the Christmas decorations. However, unseasonably warm temperatures gave way to a storm system Wednesday night, which produced high winds and cooler temperatures. Bill Quinton, Bolivar County emergency management director, reported several trees were knocked down, including one of the large oak trees on Memorial Drive. The National Weather Service said the storm system was expected to be out of the state in most areas by mid-day leaving behind much cooler temperatures and gusty winds. Joanne Culin, a meteorologist with Weather Service in Jackson, said some light rain may continue Thursday in some areas but much of the system was moving quickly out of the state. Forecasters said temperatures could fall to near freezing in many areas.
