The Delta State University men’s and women’s swim and diving teams are moving up in the national rankings.

In this week’s CollegeSwimming.com Poll, the Statesmen, who were No. 22 last week, moved up to No. 11 this week in the men’s poll. The Lady Statesmen, who were unranked last week, entered this week’s women’s poll at No. 18.

The Statesmen and Lady Statesmen were able to move up because of their strong performance in last weekend’s DSU Christmas Swimming Invitational at Delta State Aquatic Center.

In the men’s division at the Christmas Invitational, sophomore Yvan Nys set a school record for the fastest time in the 200-backstroke (1:47.50), freshman Karl Richard Hennebach broke the school record in the 100-freestyle (44.83), the 100-butterfly (48.00) and the 50-freestyle (20.35) and senior Christian Barrett set the school record in the 100-breaststroke (56.97). Hennebach also qualified for the NCAA Division II National Championships in March.

In men’s diving, freshmen Matthew Swaine scored a 513.2 and Conner Bennett scored a 475.2, which are the top two scores in the history of the Delta State Aquatic Center in an 11-dive format. They also earned bids to the NCAA Division II National Championships in March.

In the 200-medley relay, Nys, Barrett, Hennebach and junior Bear IIes set a DSU record in that event with a time of 1:31.39.

In the women’s division at the Christmas Invitational, sophomore Dani Meerholz broke a school record in the 500-freestyle (4:56.55) and the 200-freestyle (1:50.95) and junior Laura Nichols set a team record in the 100-breaststroke (1:04.52).

The Statesmen and Lady Statesmen both have young teams as there are only six seniors out of the 51 swimmers and divers (33 men, 18 women) competing for the school.

The Lady Statesmen and Statesmen will have a nice rest over the Christmas and New Year’s holidays. The Lady Statesmen’s next meet will be on Jan. 11 against the University of Arkansas-Little Rock at the Delta State Aquatics Center, while the Statesmen’s next meet will be on Jan. 12 against Ouachita Baptist at the Delta State Aquatics Center.
