Beginning Dec. 3, the children began bringing in canned food and non-perishable items to donate to St. Gabriel Mercy Center Food Pantry in Mound Bayou.
The event, spearheaded by administrative intern Sandra King, received over 2,500 canned food items from students and staff members.
“During this giving season, the canned food drive is a way for the school to give back to the community," King said.
Principal Johnnie Vick shared his students' enthusiasm for the drive, “Students and teachers eagerly brought in canned foods each day. We look forward to making this an annual event. We want to teach our children the value of giving back."
“We will be able to feed a lot of families because of the efforts of this school," said Sister Donna Mary of St. Gabriel who was on hand to receive the donation and expressed her appreciation to the entire school for their efforts.
