The opening half turned out to be a back-and-forth affair between the Lady Statesmen (7-3, 2-0 GSC) and the Lady Bulldogs (7-4, 2-1 GSC), with each team attempting to take control of the game by building a slight lead. Amy Phillamlee put Union on top 8-4 at the 16:57 mark to give her team their largest lead of the first-half after connecting on a deep range three-point attempt.
The Green-and-White fought back from the four-point deficit to keep the game close behind the play of sophomore Rhandi Ball and holding Union to 10-of-26 (.385) shooting. Ball finished the half with nine points on 4-of-6 shooting from the floor.
With five ties and 13 lead changes the Lady Statesmen ended the half down 28-31 on 12-of-25 (.480) shooting. Seneca Walton went into the locker room with six points and six rebounds while Chelsey Rhodes and Brooke Rhodes chipped in five points a piece.
Shelby Ashcraft paced the Lady Bulldogs with 12 points and five rebounds with backup from Phillamlee who connected on 4-of-8 for 11 points.
Chelsey Rhodes posted six points to led the Lady Statesmen on a 14-2 run coming out of the locker room, while the Green-and-White defense forced five turnovers to take a 44-33 lead at the 11:31 mark.
The Lady Statesmen stood firm on the defensive side of the ball to close out the game scoring 18 points off of nine second-half turnovers by the Lady Bulldogs.
Brooke Rhodes paced Delta State with 21 points on 6-of-13 shooting while Ball recorded a double-double of 18 points and 10 rebounds on the night. Walton finished with 14 points and eight rebounds while Chelsey Rhodes contributed 13 points.
Ashcraft finished the night with a career-high 19 points to pace the Lady Bulldogs while Philamlee chipped in 15 points.
The Lady Statesmen return to action on Saturday to face off again the University of North Alabama at home inside Walter-Sillers Coliseum. Tip is scheduled for 2 p.m. and will be broadcast on the Statesmen Sports Network.
