Lady Chargers get by Lady Statesmen

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The University of Alabama-Huntsville Lady Chargers outscored the Delta State University Lady Statesmen basketball team 39-30 to earn a 69-64 victory, Saturday at Spragins Hall.

The Lady Statesmen (8-5, 3-2) led 29-20 with 5:41 remaining in the first half, before UAH (8-8, 5-1) used a 10-5 spurt to close out the half.

UAH used 10-of-16 from the free throw line to trail only 34-30 at halftime, despite shooting only 8-of-23 (34.8) from the floor in the first half. DSU finished 14-of-32 (43.8) from the field, but struggled at free throw line, going 4-of-11 (36.4).

Brooke Rhodes led DSU with eight first half points, while Jordan Smith and Bailee Robinson each had seven for the Lady Chargers.

The Lady Chargers took a 47-46 lead, its first of the second half, with 12:22 remaining, on a three-point basket by Shannon Steinert.

DSU fought back to take a 50-49 lead on a Seneca Walton layup with 8:57 left. Another bucket by Walton gave the Lady Statesmen a 56-50 lead with 6:31 left. UAH answered with an 11-2 run to take a 61-58 lead, on a three-pointer by Jasmine Hammon with 3:47 remaining.

From that point, UAH made six free throws to close out the game.

Jordan Smith finished with 20 to lead the Lady Chargers while, Walton finished with 20, including 13 in the second half to pace DSU. Brooke Rhodes also helped the Green-and-White with 15 points and eight rebounds. Rhandi Ball had a game-high 13 rebounds for DSU.

UAH finished 20-of-53 (37.7) from the floor, but were helped by making 21-of-38 free throw attempts. The Lady Statesmen, who were outrebounded 44-41 from the floor, finished 24-of-64 (37.5) and were 12-of-20 from the free throw stripe.

The Lady Statesmen return to Walter Sillers Coliseum on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. to take on the University of West Alabama.
