James McArthur Phillips, 61, of Rosedale died on Monday, February 4, 2013, at Delta Regional Medical Center in Greenville.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, February 9, 2013, at the Riverside United Baptist Church in Rosedale, followed by a burial at the Riverside Memorial Gardens in Symonds officiated by Rev. Larry Williams.

Visitation hours will be from 4-5 p.m. on Friday, February 8, 2013, at the Redmon Funeral Home Chapel in Rosedale. The wake is scheduled for the same day from 5-6 p.m. at the Redmon Funeral Home Chapel.

Gunnery Sergeant James McArthur Philips was born in Rosedale on December 11, 1951. He was the son of Catherine Phillips Barnes and Steve "Big Tom" Harris.

He confessed a belief in Christ at the age of 9 at Gospel Temple MB Church. He was united in holy matrimony to Luvenia McNeary on November 13, 1971. This union was blessed with four children: Danny McNeary, Kiwanie Phillips, James Phillips Jr. and Artema Phillips.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Catherine and Artema Barnes and Steve Harris; grandmother, Annie "Coote" Moore; godmother, Blanche Jennings; mother-in-law, Juanita Matheney and; one grandson, Reginald James Towers.

James heeded the call of duty by enlisting into the United Stated Marine Corps in 1971. He was a career veteran proudly serving his country for 21 years of active duty and 10 yeas stateside in the Marine Corps Reserves before retiring. He remained an active member of the American Legion: Montgomery Green Post #220.

He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Luvenia Phillips; four children, Danny Ray McNeary of Madison, Wis., Kiwanie Phillips-Towers of Pace, James McArthur Phillips Jr. of Madison, Wis. and Artema Nichols Phillips of Nantucket, Mass.; and a sister, Blanch Ann Phillips-Turnage of Rosedale.
