Health fair scheduled
Southern Rural Black Women’s Initiative’s Bolivar County Human Rights Commissions have partnered with the University of Mississippi Medical Center School of Nursing, The Mercy Delta Express Project and the Diabetes Foundation of Mississippi to host a Community Health Fair on Saturday, March 2, 2013.
The event will be held at the Shelby Public Library, 211 3rd Street.
The event will begin at 10 a.m. and end at 2 p.m.
The event is free to the public and open to all ages and will consist of important health screens such as diabetes, stroke, vision screens along with blood pressure and cholesterol checks and much more.
A certified health educator will also be available at the fair. There will be door prizes and gifts.
Small Business workshop set
The U.S. Small Business Administration will hold a Small Business Workshop in Shaw on March 18 from 6- 8 p.m.
The workshop will be held at the Shaw City Hall, located at 101 Faison Street, and will highlight a variety of SBA programs including loans, counseling and business development resources, and government contracting.
If you want to start a business, or are in business and want to expand, you should register to attend this workshop.
There is no charge to attend. Seating is limited, so pre-register by calling (662) 754-3131 no later than March 15 to reserve a seat.
Minority vendor lunch, learn planned
Delta State University announces its semi-annual Minority Vendor Lunch and Learn Workshop to be held March 12 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Baioni Conference Center located in Broom Hall on the campus.
The workshop will focus on the needs of the university and how minority vendors may be able to partner with the university to meet those needs.
All vendors in Bolivar County and the surrounding areas are encouraged to attend the event.
The event is free to all minority vendors who have pre-registered, however space is limited to the first 50 vendors to pre-register.

Hatcher inducted into Hall of Fame
Emily Hatcher of Cleveland was among those recently inducted into the 2013 Hall of Fame at Northwest Mississippi Community College.
Northwest President, Dr. Gary Lee Spears, congratulated 11 students for their induction into the 2013 Hall of Fame at the Feb. 14 meeting of the Northwest Board of Trustees meeting on the Senatobia campus.
Emily Hatcher of Cleveland, who has a cumulative GPA of 3.86, is an elementary education major. She plays softball for Northwest and is an officer in Phi Theta Kappa. Hatcher was a maid on the 2011 Homecoming Court, and was on the President's List.
She plans to attend Delta State University and pursue a bachelor's in elementary education. She also plans to pursue a master's degree and to teach.
