Included on the chamber committee’s list was failure to pick up limbs from the curbs, leaving trash along the routes, spilling garbage liquid on city streets and being rude to customers.
Steve Horton, president and CEO of Resourceful Environmental Services, Cleveland’s garbage company, came before the board of aldermen to respond.
“We pick up in the city of Cleveland over 30 thousand stops per month and my office may get two calls (complaints) per week,” said Horton.
He said his office is aware of the limb situation and knows that as the weather warms yard work will increase.
“We run that truck (limb truck) on Saturdays. Our primary concern on Mondays and Tuesdays is getting the household garbage up. That‘s when it’s the heaviest,” said Horton. “We will come back on Thursdays and Fridays and pick up the garbage and limbs and rubbish. That’s when it is the lightest.”
He added if trash pick up was still heavy at the end of the week then he would send a truck out on Saturday for limbs.
Horton said RES’s contract with the city dictates limbs must be no longer than five feet when out at the curb.
“I prefer them to be five feet but not everybody is going to take a tape measure to them. That would be a perfect world,” said Horton, who added that his people would go ahead and pick up what’s already at the curb but express that it was an extra cost to his company.
City Public Works Director Ray Bell said his staff has also gone out and picked up limbs when citizens call despite the fact it is RES’s responsibility.
Horton said he is also aware of issues with the plugs, which release liquids from the garbage trucks, not being put back in because “no one likes getting that garbage juice on them.”
“Ajax won’t take it off,” he said. “If I lived in the city of Cleveland, I wouldn’t’ want to smell that.”
Bell also mentioned to Horton that trash was being left in the streets from broken bags or from the RES people not picking it up properly.
“We just want to make sure we are giving these citizens the best service we can give them.
“We want to make sure these things stop and they do it properly,” he said.
“I will address these issues with my route supervisor,” said Horton, who added that if a garbage breaks, his people are supplied with the means to clean up the mess and should do it.
Horton also said he would absolutely talk to his employees about attitude with customers.
“I try to tell them to treat everybody like you would your mother but in the heat of the moment they forget that.”
Horton said all of the issues would be addressed with his staff.
The details of the aldermen’s discussion with Horton were related to the chamber committee.
The members said they were pleased and looked forward to seeing improvements.
Bell, upon the request of the aldermen, said his department would be keeping track of complaints concerning RES and keep everybody informed.
