Lady Statesmen ousted in GSC semis

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Delta State University women's basketball fell to the University of Alabama-Huntsville 68-57 in the semifinal matchup of the Gulf South Conference Tournament on Saturday inside the Pete Hanna Center.

Rhandi Ball and Seneca Walton posted double-double performances of 25 points and 12 rebounds and 10 points and 12 rebounds respectively in the effort.

The Lady Statesmen (19-9) used an 8-1 run to gain separation from the Lady Chargers (14-16) early in the first half to go ahead 13-8 at the 12:36 mark. Ball quickly settled back into her offensive groove early with 4-of-7 shooting from the floor and 13 first-half points.

UAH captured the lead three times throughout the half but DSU quickly regained the lead on each ensuing possession. The final time Chelsey Rhodes connected on a mid-range jumper as time expired to give the Green-and-White a 33-32 lead into the locker room.

Delta State ended the half on 12-of-35 (.343) shooting from the floor and were led by Ball's 13 points and five rebounds. Rhodes followed with six points and Walton snagged six rebounds.

Jordan Smith led the way for the Lady Chargers with 11 points and four rebounds with Bailee Robinson tallying seven points.

The Lady Chargers kept pushing the Lady Statesmen with ties and lead changes until Smith connected on a layup to spurn a 9-0 run that gave Alabama-Huntsville a 59-51 lead with 5:33 remaining and never relinquished the lead.

Smith posted 23 points on 7-of-14 shooting from the floor and Robinson closed out with 11 points and five rebounds for UAH in the contest.

The Lady Statesmen will now wait to see where they land in the NCAA South Regional Tournament, as the announcement will be made on tonight at 9:00 p.m.
