The Wildcats made short work of the Greenwood High School Bulldogs in their Region 3-4A opener by winning 16-0 in five innings. The win pushed Cleveland to 9-1 overall with a 1-0 mark in the region.
Jordan Burchfield pitched a whale of a game for the Wildcats as he stuck out six walked two and yielded just one hit in the complete game shutout.
“We took care of business today,” Cleveland High head coach Steve Wies said. “Jordan went out and threw a game with a lot of strikes. He kept the pitch count way down and got them swinging.”
The Wildcats started off a little slow at the plate as the game was 1-0 after two innings. Cleveland eventually found its groove by scoring eight runs in the third and seven runs in the fourth.
“For the most part, we did okay at the plate with just a very few exceptions where we were a little anxious and didn’t show much patience at the plate,” Wies said. “For the most part, I thought we did swing the bats fairly well and ran bases well.”
Marshall Boggs led Cleveland at the plate with two hits including a double with three RBIs and two runs, followed by Jared Hunt with two hits, two runs and a RBI, Matt Ray with a hit, two runs and two RBIs and Matt Hardman with a hit and three runs.
Cleveland will return to the diamond on Wednesday with a make-up game against Simmons at Sank Powe Field.
