The Cleveland High School Lady Wildcats are off to a strong start in the fast pitch softball action season.

The Lady Wildcats are currently 8-2 with a perfect 6-0 mark in Region 3-4A action. Cleveland’s most recent outing was a dominant one as they swept the Amanda Elzy Lady Panthers in a doubleheader, winning 15-0 and 16-0.

Lady Wildcats head coach Jody Wright has been happy with the offense.

“They’re trying to swing the bats aggressively as possible and get a lead,” Wright said. “We’re still making some errors, but hopefully we’ll work through those. For the most part, the girls have done a really good job.”

The pitching for Cleveland was solid as Breanna Garner and Taylor Collins combined for seven shutout innings, giving up just one hit while facing only 22 batters on the day.

In the first game, Garner and Collins combined on a perfect game. Garner pitched the first two innings and struck out all six batters she face. Collins came on in the third inning and retired all three batters she faced.

Cleveland’s offense scored four runs in the first, six runs in the second and five runs in the third to end the game after three inning due to the mercy rule.

Molly Upchurch stroked three hits, including a home run with two RBIs, while Kellie Cummins roped three hits and drove in two runs to lead Cleveland at the plate.

In the nightcap, Cleveland scored eight runs in the first, a run in the second, four runs in the third and three runs in the fourth to end the game after four innings due to the mercy rule.

Collins went the distance in the circle as she gave up just one hits with eight strikeouts and no walks in the four-inning complete game.

Lauren Ashley Collins drilled four hits and drove in three runs to lead Cleveland in game two.
