The Bayou Academy Colts made short work of the DeSoto School Thunderbirds in the first round of the Class A State Baseball Playoffs Tuesday evening in Helena, Ark.

The Colts won two straight in the best of three series by winning the first game 10-0 and the second game 11-1. Bayou improved to 14-2 and will play the winner of the Deer Creek-Delta series in the second round next week.

Bayou turned in a strong overall pitching performance on the day as Michael Portner and Trevor Runnels combined for 13 strikeouts and no walks in 10 innings of work.

“Having 10 innings without a walk is a key ingredient to success,” Bayou head baseball coach Will Reed said. “When you begin the postseason, you can’t give up any extra base runners and expect to win.”

In the first game, Portner tossed a five-inning shutout as he gave up three hits with eight strikeouts.

The offense supported Portner well as Chantz Arbuckle and Cole Hutchinson stroked two hits each to lead the way. Parker Hudson and Runnels roped a triple each to aid the Colts.

In the second game, Runnels yielded just one run on three hits with five strikeouts in a five-inning complete game effort.

Runnels also roped two hits including a triple, followed by Davis Dalton with two hits including a double and Hudson with two hits.
