When game two of the North A State Title series came to a close Monday evening at Smith Wills Stadium in Jackson, the only thing the Bayou Academy Colts could do is pack their bags and drive back to Cleveland waiting for another baseball season.

The Colts saw their run for a state title came to a close as they lost to the Tri-County Academy Rebels 5-2. Tri-County, at 26-3, will now play Glenbrook School for the Class A State Title this week. Bayou ended its season at 16-4.

“Ending the season on the note we did was disappointing, but the progress the guys made during the season was good,” Bayou head coach Will Reed said. “We’ll look to continue that going into next year.”

In the top of the third, things seemed to go in favor of the Colts. After Tyler Kitchings reached on a walk, Chantz Arbuckle tagged a single. Caleb Pilgrim drilled a single to drove in Kitchings, while Trevor Runnels hit a ground ball to second which scored Arbuckle to make the score 2-0.

The Rebels battled back in the bottom of the fourth as they had a runner reach base on a hit by pitch and another reach on an infield single. Those two runners would score on a triple to tie the game at 2-2. The Rebels were able to get the lead before the inning was over as an RBI-single made the score 3-2.

In the sixth, Tri-County had a runner reach base on a hit by pitch, while another runner reached base on a walk. Those two runners would score on a single to make the score 5-2.

“We had mental mistakes on offense that hurt us,” Reed said. “We didn’t score with a lead-off triple and we got picked off twice. They did a good job of manufacturing runs on us.”

The Colts couldn’t catch up as the Rebels ended up securing the victory.

Michael Portner suffered the loss on the mound as he gave up five runs on four hits with three walks and two hit batter in 5 2/3 innings of work. Trevor Runnels entered the game in relief for Bayou in the sixth as he tossed two-thirds of an inning striking out one.

Portner drilled hits two including a triple, and Pilgrim roped two hits and drove in a run to lead the Colts at the plate.
