The sixth annual Birdies and Backhands Tennis and Golf Tournament will be held on June 1 at the Cleveland Country Club.

All the proceeds from the event are used to fund grants to the North Sunflower Medical Foundation.

The golf tournament is a two-person scramble for men and women, while the tennis tournament is a doubles tournament for women only.

Birdies and Backhands Chairperson Elise Jenkins said the event has been a hit over the years.

“It’s been very successful as far as participation,” Jenkins said. “We have an opportunity to attract more players because we have the capabilities now with the 18-hole course. We’re actively looking for both golfers and tennis players.”

Jenkins said the fund raised for the North Sunflower Medical Foundation has helped out in many ways.

“We use the proceeds from this tournament to assist us in making grants to the North Sunflower Medical Center for equipment,” Jenkins said. “We also make educational grants to employees at the North Sunflower Medical Center that would like to go back to school and further their education.”

During the golf tournament, Tollison Insurance Agency in Ruleville has sponsored a $10,000 hole-in-one and will do so again this year. There will also by a new sponsor for this year’s tournament, as Mississippi Land Bank will sponsor a “Closet to the Pin” where one golfer will win a new set of Callaway X Hot Irons.

“It gives players an opportunity to win,” Jenkins said about the Closet to the Pin. “Someone can win the hole-in-one and also win closet to the pin and not necessarily win their flight. It just gives people an opportunity to win both money and merchandise at the tournament.”

The entry deadline for the golf tournament is May 30 at noon. The fee is $100 per team and $50 per person. The entry fee for the tennis tournament is $35 per person and the entry deadline is also May 30 at noon.

The registration time for the golf tournament is set for 7:30 a.m. on the day of the tournament with the shotgun start time set for 8:30 a.m. The registration time for the tennis tournament will be 8:30 a.m. on the day of the event with the first round set to start at 9 a.m.
