Area track stars shine at state

There were several area runners that shined in the 1A and 3A State Track and Field Meets in Pearl High School at Pearl Saturday afternoon.

In the 3A Boys State Track and Field Meet, Anfernee Morgan won the 800-meter run (2:05.68), and Perry Henry finished third in the 800-meter run (2:08.47) for East Side High School. East Side’s relay team of Morgan, Henry Kevierre Alexander and Phillips Williams won the 4x400-meter relay with a time of 3:33.27.

The Trojans ended up finishing fifth as a team with 43 points.

In the 3A Girls Track and Field Meet, East Side’s LaShyra Cotton won the 400-meter dash (59.94), finished second in the high jump (5-04.00) and took third in the 800-meter run (2:33.89). The Trojanettes took seventh in the team standings with 35 points.

In the 1A Boys State Track and Field Meet, senior Derrick Jenkins won the 200-meter dash (22.55) and took second in the 100-meter dash (11.17) and sophomore Jamarcus Tyler finished third in the 800-meter run (2:11.84) for Ray Brooks. For Shaw High School, junior Octavius Stimage won the 400-meter dash (53.19), and Malik Walker finished third in the high jump (6-02).

Ray Brooks also finished third in the 4x100-meter relay (45.56).

The Ray Brooks Tigers ended up finishing fifth with 41 points, while the Shaw High School Hawks took eighth with 26 points.

In the 1A Girls State Track and Field Meet, Ray Brooks eighth grader Deneshia Lindsey won the 1,600-meter run (6:00.90).

In the overall team standings in the girls meet, Ray Brooks took ninth with 23 points.
