Dr. Lula C. "L.C." Dorsey was born on a plantation in Tribett on December 17, 1938. She was the "knee baby" of Mary Frances Davis-Jones and Will Jones's seven children. She grew up in a household full of love and support. Dr. Dorsey received her elementary education in plantation schools in Sunflower and Washington counties. She had a great interest in and excitement of learning and sharing what she learned with others. She attended Drew Colored School but interrupted her schooling during her senior year to become a wife and mother of six children. She returned to school in 1968 and received a GED through Tuft's University's STAR (Systematic Training and Redevelopment) Program. She went on to receive a master's degree in social work, a certificate in health management from John Hopkins University and a doctorate in social work from Howard University. She also studied in Israel, The People's Republic of China, Kazakhstan, India, Russia and South Africa.
Left with many memories of her are her six children, Cynthia Dorsey Smith, Norma J. Dorsey, Anita Dorsey Word (Larry), Michael A. Dorsey (Tanya), Adriane Dorsey Kidd (Winston) and Hildery Dorsey Jr.; seven grandchildren, Ahmad R Smith (Ashley), Aisha Smith Nyandora (Joseph), Terrence Trigg, Michelle D. Russell (Bruce), Hilary M. Word, Jamal Kidd and Jacob Kidd; and one great-grandson, Tendekai J. Nyandoro; and many nephews, nieces, and friends.
Memorial gifts may be made to Tougaloo College which she loved dearly.
