On Tuesday the organization hosted its annual Campaign Kickoff Luncheon at First Baptist Church for the Pacesetters.
Volunteers and representatives from various Pacesetter companies, as well as United Way agencies were served a lunch of fresh pulled pork sandwiches, baked beans, coleslaw, an array of desserts and cold beverages that were donated by Nehi Bottling Company.
After their meal, they were spiritually feed with musical renditions from Kenny Williams of Cleveland Funeral Home and Ray Mattox, pianist for North Greenwood Baptist Church.
The 2013 campaign theme is "Let's Make The Difference."
According to Brett Boykin, campaign chair, the organization selected the theme because Bolivar County is often referenced as the jewel of the South.
"We're really excited about this year's campaign, because so many people have worked very hard to make all of this possible, " said Boykin.
According to Boykin, the Pacesetters have raised a total of $35,714.36.
The organization's goal is to raise $123,710 by the end of its 2013 campaign.
"I think that we are going to do well this year. We've got United We Dance on Oct. 21. We got the United We Dance idea from United Way of Vicksburg. Their organization hosted the event and it was very lucrative. It should be a lot of fun," said Boykin.
Will Sledge, president of United Way of Cleveland-Bolivar County, express great appreciation to the Pacesetters, "Our Pacesetters are Atmos Energy, Baxter HealthCare, Bolivar Commercial, Entergy, Monsanto, and Quality Steel Corporation. You guys are the people who have set the pace for the whole campaign. "We really appreciate all of your support and we thank all of you for your hard work and dedication."
Boykin said the Pacesetters determine the way in which the campaign will begin and end.
"It's going to be a good year for United Way and we are so excited," said Sledge.
Agencies supported by the United Way must go through an application each year.
Selected this year for funding are: American Red Cross; 4-H Bolivar County; Bolivar County Literacy Council; Boy Scouts, Chickasaw Council; Community Counseling Center; Girl Scouts Heart of the South; Helping Hands/Community Assistance; Our House, Inc.; St. Jude Children’s Hospital; Sunny Seniors; and U.S.O.
All donations raised in Bolivar County stay in Bolivar County to help residents here. Only one percent is sent to the larger United Way organization to maintain membership.
Donations may be sent to the United Way of Cleveland-Bolivar County at P.O. Box 1795, Cleveland, MS 38732 or call 662-846-1646 for more information.
