Campaign chairman Bret Boykin announced to a group of volunteers recently that the United Way is shaking things up a bit by hosting a United We Dance competition.
"We think that this is going to be a good fundraiser. We are very excited about it," said Boykin.
"It's sort of like Dancing With The Stars. Anybody who loves to dance or think that they can dance is encouraged to come out and have fun. As of now, we only have four couples, but we need more," said Executive Director Peggy Davis.
The event is to take place on Oct. 21 at the Cleveland Country Club beginning at 6 p.m.
Tickets are $25 per person and can be purchased at the door.
Couples will dance the night away to the smooth tunes of DJ Saxy, as they sip cocktails and enjoy delectable hors d'oeuvres.
"We just want people to have a good time," added Davis.
Five judges will determine the winning couple based on certain criteria.
At the end of the night, the United Way will give away two prizes; one for the dance competition and the other for the People's Choice winner.
The People's Choice Award winner will be determined through public participation voting.
Each vote is $1 and at the end of the night, the person who has raised the most money is deemed the People's Choice Award winner.
A variety of voting options will be made available to the public, including the night of the dance and through the United Way Website at www.unitedwayclevbc.org.
The organization's goal is $123,710.
Agencies supported by the United Way must go through an application each year.
Selected this year for funding are: American Red Cross; 4-H Bolivar County; Bolivar County Literacy Council; Boy Scouts, Chickasaw Council; Community Counseling Center; Girl Scouts Heart of the South; Helping Hands/Community Assistance; Our House, Inc.; St. Jude Children’s Hospital; Sunny Seniors; and U.S.O.
All donations raised in Bolivar County stay in Bolivar County to help residents here. Only one percent is sent to the larger United Way organization to maintain membership.
Donations may be sent to the United Way of Cleveland-Bolivar County at P.O. Box 1795, Cleveland, MS 38732 or call 662-846-1646 for more information.
