He was born February 14, 1920, near Bennett, Colo., the son of Floris Clifford and Leota (Bilslend) Lewton. One of nine children, he grew up on the plains of northeastern Colorado.
He and his brothers helped raise wheat with horses in the early years. In later years, he farmed with large 4-wheel drive tractors. He graduated high school from Prospect Valley and later went to
Aircraft Mechanic School in Denver, Chicago and Los Angeles.
He joined the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1942, working his way to Staff Sergeant with the 312th Bombardment Group. He served from New Guinea and the northern Solomon Islands to the southern Phillippines & Luzon. He was honorably discharged in October 1945.
He returned home to farm with his brother Verle near Plattner, Colo. On March 12, 1950, he married Naomi Ervin and they later moved to another farm near Akron where their kids grew up and went to school. They moved to Missouri in 1967 on a ranch and he farmed until 2008 when he retired at the age of 88. He moved to Meadow Brook Manor in Wheatland until his health issues caused his moved to Christian Health Care in Hermitage, Mo.
He was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers Elwyn, Harold, Verle, Glenn and Lynn; and a sister, Zelma Young.
Survivors include two sons, David Lewton of Weaubleau, Mo., and John Lewton of Wheatland, Mo.; a daughters, Suzanne Black of Louisburg, Mo., and Naomi Lewton of Wheatland, Mo.; two sisters, Wava Lewton of Brighton, Mo., and Donna Russell of Coos Bay, Ore.; 10 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren.
Funeral services were at 10 a.m. Tuesday, October 8, 2013, at Hathaway-Peterman Chapel with Rev. Jim Romay officiating. Burial was in Fairview-Butcher Cemetery, northeast of Weaubleau, Mo., under the direction of Hathaway-Peterman Funeral Home, Wheatland, Mo.
Visitation was from 6-8 p.m. Monday, Oct. 7, 2013, evening at the funeral home.
