For this event, Mississippi Emergency Management Agency Director Robert Latham, Bolivar County Emergency Management Director Bill Quinton, Cleveland School District Officials and students will be in attendance for the earthquake drill at Bell Academy in Boyle.
Although they will be attending Bell Academy for the drill, all of the schools in Bolivar County and across the southeast are encouraged to participate
This drill is to help teach the children what to do in case of an earthquake.
Although Cleveland is located just south of the New Madrid Seismic Zone, tremors and earthquakes could definitely affect us according to Quinton.
Quinton said, “If we have an earthquake, what they tell us is, we have chances of liquefaction.”
Liquefaction is where, during an earthquake, the ground begins to act like a liquid and can cause serious damage.
Although the earthquake would most likely stop between Memphis and Tunica, officials still push for readiness.
“We prepare for it as if it’s going to happen, and hope it doesn’t,” said Quinton.
