“It’s just going to be another event to help raise money for our United Way — a fun event,” said Executive Director Peggy Davis.
The United Way is an organization devoted to improving community life through the promotion of education, financial stability, and healthy living.
The money raised at the competition will go towards the United Way agencies, which includes American Red Cross, Bolivar County Literacy Council, Boy Scouts Chickasaw Council, Community Counseling Center, 4-H of Bolivar County, Girl Scouts Heart of the South, Helping Hands Community Assistance, Our House Inc., Sunny Seniors, St. Jude Children’s Hospital, and United Service Organizations.
“We’ve got someone who will be doing the Cha Cha … someone doing the Two-step,” said Davis. “We won’t choose the dances for them. They will decide and let us know. There are five dance couples, possibly six. The judges will be scoring them on appearance, showmanship, originality, and overall performance.”
Gift baskets filled with “goodies and gift certificates” will be awarded to the first place winner as well as a special award known as the people’s choice. “It will be awarded to the couple with the most votes, and it’s a dollar a vote,” explained Davis.
“If anyone wants to make a donation, they can donate that night or they can make it payable to the United Way of Cleveland-Bolivar County or bring it directly to me,” said Davis.
In addition those interested may go to the United Way website, www.unitedwayclevbc.org, and donate.
The evening will begin at 6 p.m. with cocktails and hors d'oeuvres. The dance competition will begin at 7 p.m., followed by entertainment and awards. The night will end with an open floor for anyone’s dancing pleasure.
Davis also noted that Katherine Grant, aka Katt, would be the DJ for the evening.
“I have a committee helping, and they have been wonderful,” said Davis. “This is our first year! Hopefully we can continue to do this. I would like to see it.”
