Bell promotes healthy nutrition

B.L. Bell Academy is working even harder to become a healthier school.

Bell Academy is currently the only school in Mississippi to be recognized by The Alliance for a Healthier Generation for providing students with healthy lunches and earlier this school year, achieved the 2013 Bronze National Recognition Award for the Healthy Schools Program.

The school celebrated a Health Day on Nov. 12 and learned all about healthy food choices.

DSU nutrition and dietetics volunteers as well as elementary education volunteers visited the school and teamed up with Bell Academy to help provide information about MyPlate (replacement the food pyramid), healthy snack choices, healthy lunch choices, and proper portion sizes.

Kristen Smith, science specialist and health coordinator at Bell Academy said, "As a Math, Science, and Health school, Bell is continually focusing on these strands. Walking into the classrooms, these strands are evident and easily found. Being able to bring in other people was a great way to reinforce what our teachers are already working on."

After students learned all about making healthy food choices that day at school, parents were invited to attend a Health Parent Night. The night included 4k through 3rd grade performing two skits on healthy choices.

Parents had the opportunity to visit four different stations and learn how to make several healthy snacks.

"Our 4th grade students taught parents about healthy snack choices and the parents were able to see how to make healthy smoothies and also a snack called 'ladybugs in the snow.' Parents were also able to sample these delicious treats," said Smith.

Fifth graders taught parents about proper portion control and sixth graders taught about MyPlate, which has replaced the food pyramid.

MyPlate is the current nutrition guide published by the United States Department of Agriculture.

MyPlate displays the five food groups using a familiar mealtime visual, a place setting.

Krista Davis a nutritionist from DSU also presented the parents information about how to create a healthy lunch for their kids.

Smith was excited that the night went so well.

"Overall, the night was a great success. Parents walked away with new knowledge about how to make healthier choices for their kids. As a school we are dedicated to continuing to educate our students about making healthy choices now so they can live a healthy lifestyle as an adult," Smith said.
