Their method — randomly stopping drivers to check for seat belts and other vehicle violations.
“We’re not targeting people, we just want to keep people safe,” said Assistant Police Chief Marcellus Chatman, who added the police department has the blessing of the city board of aldermen and the Bolivar County Board of Supervisors.
Chatman said there have been too many accidents on U.S. Highway 61 going into and coming out of Mound Bayou.
“We will be stopping people anywhere in Mound Bayou at anytime of day. We will be giving tickets. If people know this maybe they’ll wear their seat belts coming into and leaving town,” he said.
Chatman said the police department would be conducting this exercise through February.
“We’re hoping to save some lives,” he said.
