The 1A Ray Brooks Lady Tigers edged out the 6A South Panola Lady Tigers 59-56, the 4A Cleveland High School Wildcats cruised past the 1A St. Joe Fighting Irish 72-39 and the 4A Cleveland High School Lady Wildcats ran over the 1A St. Joe Lady Fighting Irish 65-23.
In the Ray Brooks-South Panola girls game, Ray Brooks actually trailed 33-32 at halftime. Ray Brooks made a run in the third quarter and was able to get 10-point lead. South Panola fought back in the fourth quarter, but Ray Brooks was able to hold on for the victory.
Markelia Cross led Ray Brooks with 20 points, followed by T’Kyra Hicks with 15 points, Alexia Weatherspoon with 10 points and DyNesha Lindsey with eight points.
Ray Brooks improved to 4-1.
In the CHS-St. Joe boys game, the Wildcats were dominant through out the entire contest. Cleveland took a 32-18 lead at halftime and went on to wrap up the victory in the second half.
The Wildcats shot 40 percent (26-of-65) from the floor including 48-percent (23-of-47) from 2-point territory.
Jaylen McDonald scored 16 points with four rebounds to lead Cleveland, followed by Ellis Townsend with 14 points and seven rebounds, Vaughnte Dorsey with 11 points, two rebounds and two steals and Charles Rogers and Jatavis Scott with nine points each.
Cleveland improved to 2-4.
In the CHS-St. Joe girls game, the Lady Wildcats were on top of their game the entire night. They took a 26-9 lead after the first quarter and a 38-13 lead at halftime. Cleveland continue its good play in the second half by outscoring St. Joe 27-10.
Senior shooting guard McKinnon Skeen shot the ball well for the Lady Wildcats as she went an impressive 7-of-12 from 3-point land and 7-of-15 overall from the floor. She also went 3-of-4 from the free throw line and finished with a game-high 24 points. Skeen was the team’s leading rebounder with nine boards.
Sophomore Katelyn Thompson also had a great night by going 7-of-11 from the floor with 15 points, seven rebounds and three steals to aid the Lady Wildcats, followed by Lauren Ashley Collins with eight points and eight rebounds, Taylor Collins with eight points, five rebounds and two steals and Ella Mae Brown with four points and six rebounds.
Cleveland pushed its record to 4-3.
In other action in the CHS Tournament, the Ray Brooks Tigers lost to the South Panola 68-33. Ray Brooks fell to 0-5.
Karvin Smith scored 13 points to lead Ray Brooks, followed by Jamarcus Marshall with eight points.
The tournament will resume tonight as the St. Joe girls will take on the South Panola girls at 4 p.m., the St. Joe boys will play the South Panola boys at 5:30 p.m., the Cleveland High girls and the Ray Brooks girls will battle at 7 p.m. and the Cleveland High boys and the Ray Brooks boys will take on each other at 8:30 p.m.
