Charlene Smith Crumby, 72, of Greenville died on Monday, January 6, 2014, in Jackson.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. on Saturday, January 11, 2014, at Calvary Baptist Church. Burial will be in the North Cleveland Cemetery under the direction of Mortimer Funeral Home in Greenville.

Visitation will be from 4-6 p.m. on Friday, January 10, 2014, at Mortimer Funeral Home in Greenville.

Charlene was born February 22, 1942 in Merigold to Claris H. and Versie (McGovern) Smith. She attended elementary schools in Merigold and Cleveland. She received her B.A. degree from Delta State University in 1963, M.A.T. degree from Colorado Springs College in 1973 and plus 30 hours with Reading Specialist certification from the University of Louisiana in Monroe in 1984. Charlene taught elementary school in Terrebonne Parish, La., until she retired. After retirement, she moved to Rayville, La. Charlene and husband John moved to Greenville in 1989. She began substitute teaching in Richland Parish, Louisiana in 2001.

Charlene was a member of Louisiana Retired Teachers' Association, a member of the American Association of Retired Persons, and a life member of the Delta State Alumni Association.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John I. Crumby; her parents; and her sister, Glenda Smith Oaks.

Charlene is survived by her sons, John A. and Layne A. (Carmon) Crumby; granddaughters, Robin, Cortney, Kayla, and Sayde Crumby; grandson, Jon D. Crumby; twin great-grandsons, Allen and Adrean Crumby; and family friends, Denise Garrigan among them.
