First round 1A North Half Playoff action tipped off Monday night with several teams from Region 3-1A picking up wins.

The top seeded John F. Kennedy Lady Hornets hosted the No. 4 seeded Tupelo Christian Prep School Lady Eagles and destroyed them 67-42.

The Ray Books Lady Tigers hosted and defeated the Houlka Lady Wildcats 56-42. The Shaw Lady Hawks (4-16) couldn't pull off the upset on the road against Coffeeville as they fell 76-45.

The Coldwater Lady Cougars handled business on their end defeating Vardaman 67-38 on the road.

The Lady Hornets have been dominant all season and in Monday's contest they used superior athleticism and team defense to smother the Lady Eagles in their first round contest.

JFK tallied 23 steals and forced 25 turnovers in route to improving to 27-0 on the season.

"We have traditionally been a zone defense team, but this year we started playing man-to-man full court defense and the girls have really stepped up. We started earlier in the year and it's paying off now as we are starting to really come together. We are moving our feet and playing really well," said JFK Coach Linda Allen.

JFK led Tupelo Prep 50-9 at halftime.

Frederica Haywood scored 20 points with 12 rebounds, and Ieysha Mays scored 20 points with seven rebounds and seven steals to lead the Lady Hornets, followed by Alegsha Haywood with 13 points and Latina Jones with six points, six steals and five assists.

Claire Golding led Tupelo Prep with 28 points.

The Ray Brooks Lady Tigers came out and controlled the contest from the start leading 26-16 at halftime.

With the win, Lady Tigers head coach Eddie Culley is hoping the team will be able to build from it and make a strong run in the playoffs.

"I think we played pretty solid on offense and defense,” Culley said. “I hope this game boosts their confidence. This time last year we lost this ball game so this year our first goal was to go one step further and then take it one game at a time like we always do.”

T’Kyra Hicks led Ray Brooks (20-10) with 18 points, followed by Markelia Cross with 13 points.

The quarterfinals of the 1A North Half will begin Thursday at Pine Grove. The finals and semifinals will also be played at Pine Grove.

Ray Brooks will take on Pine Grove at 4 p.m. The Coldwater will play Ashland at 5:30 p.m. JFK will play Ingomar at 7 p.m. and West Union will take on Coffeeville at 8:30 p.m.
