The Statesmen took the first two games of a three-game series with the Christian Brothers University Buccaneers by winning the first game 8-1 and the second 12-0. The Statesmen improved to 9-5 overall with an 8-3 mark in the GSC, while the Buccaneers fell to 4-13 with an 0-8 mark in the conference. DSU has now won 35 straight against the Buccaneers.
DSU played well in all phases of the game as the Statesmen roped 32 hits at the plate while committing just one error in the field over the two-game stretch.
DSU rightfielder Dex Herrington had a monster day by going 4-for-8 with three home runs and six RBIs in his two games to lead Delta State.
“We played better,” Delta State head coach Mike Kinnison said. “It has been hard for us to put two good days together back-to-back on a conference weekend, and I felt like we did that. Herrington had a great day, and there are a lot of bright spots. I thought we played well defensively. “
Pitching wise, the Statesmen gave up just nine hits and got two great efforts from their starting pitchers. Michael Manley (3-0) gave up an unearned run on five hits with five strikeouts and two walks in eight innings of work to earn the win in game one, while Jonathan Moody (2-1) gave up just three hits with eight strikeouts and no walks in six shutout innings of work to pick up the victory in game two.
“I thought both Manley and Moody mixed really well,” Kinnison said. “They used all of their pitchers. They didn’t have to live and day with their fastballs. They were able to keep the other hitters off balance.””
Carlos Leal had a big day for DSU as well as he went 5-for-8 with two RBIs. Benj Sullivan went 5-for-7 one run and two RBIs to aid DSU, followed by Brent Langston with four hits, a RBI and a run, Landon Thibodeaux with four hits and a run, Kasey Hinton with three hits, three runs and two RBIs and Jordan Chovanec with three hits, two RBIs, two runs and a stolen base.
DSU and Christian Brothers will conclude the three-game series with a single game today starting at 2 p.m. at Ferriss Field.
