The Statesmen lead the GSC in team earned run average with a 2.09 ERA. The pitching is a big reason why DSU is currently 18-6 and tied with West Florida for first in the GSC with a 14-3 conference record.
The biggest strength of DSU’s team has been its three starters — Michael Manley, Jonathan Moody and Ricky Winters.
Manley is 5-0 and second in the GSC with a 0.77 ERA; Winters is 5-0 and fourth in the GSC with a 1.45 ERA and Moody is 4-1 and eighth in the GSC with a 1.83 ERA.
Manley has made six starts this year and has gone at least six innings in all of them. He hasn’t given up more than three runs in any start, and he is averaging 7.8 innings a start with two complete games. In 47 innings of work, Manley has yielded just 33 hits with 13 walks and 27 strikeouts with opponents hitting just .199 against him. For his two-year career at DSU, Manley has an impressive 14-0 record with a 1.53 ERA in 20 appearances (18 starts).
Winters has made seven appearances with six starts this year. In each of Winters’ six starts, he has pitched at least 5 2/3 innings in all of them and hasn’t given up any more than three runs in a game. Winters is currently averaging 6.9 innings a start. In 43.1 innings of work, Winters has given up just 31 hits with 10 walks and 30 strikeouts with opponents hitting just .200 against him.
Moody, who started the year in the bullpen, has earned his way into that No. 2 spot in the rotation. Moody has made four starts and has gone at least 5 1/3 innings in each of them. Over his last three starts, Moody has given up just one run in his last 20 innings with just two walks. For the year in seven total appearances, Moody has given up 29 hits with just seven walks and 31 strikeouts in 34.1 innings of work. Opponents are hitting only .236 against him and his 31 strikeouts are the highest on the team.
The trio should be on display again when DSU travels to Carrollton, Ga. to play West Georgia in a three-game GSC series. The series will start today with a doubleheader at 1 p.m. and will end on Monday with a single game at 1 p.m.
