The Statesmen sit in 19th place out of 20 teams after round one of the tournament. DSU ended up shooting a 37-over par, 321. University of Charleston (329) is the only team that currently trails DSU. Sixth ranked Nova Southeastern is in the lead after the first day with a 3-over par, 287. Fourth ranked Chico State (291) is in second, followed by top ranked Barry (292), second ranked CSU-Monterey Bay (300) and 45th ranked Indiana University of PA (301). Seventh ranked Central Missouri and Malone University are tied for sixth with a 303, while fifth ranked Lynn and 16th ranked Hawaii-Hilo are tied for eighth at 303. The top eight teams after Wednesday’s play will advance into match play on Thursday.
Chad Cupples had the best day of all for DSU by shooting a 74, which put him in a tie for 16th place. The action for DSU began on hole No. 10. After Cupples shot a three-over par, 38 on his first nine holes of action, he shot a four on hole No. 4, which was a par-5, 526-yard hole, for a birdie. He came through with his second birdie of the day on hole No. 7, where he shot a two on a par-3, 216-yard hole. The two birdies put Cupples’ score at 1-over par heading into his last two holes. Cupples ended up with bogeys on holes eight and nine to finish with a 3-over par for the day.
As a team, DSU finished with just six birdies in the first round.
Cameron Thomas shot an 81 (T85th place), Brad Thornton shot an 82 (T94th place), Zack Prichett posted an 84 (T103th place) and Reed Lindsey turned in an 85 (105th place) to round out DSU’s top performers.
DSU began play in the second round this morning as the team began action on hole No. 1. At the start of the round, Prichett was playing well in the first seven holes as he birded the first hole, pared the next four holes and recorded a birdie on hole No. 6. Prichett pared hole No. 7 to have a 2-under par. Lindsey pared his first seven holes to post an even par, Thornton was 5-over par after eight holes, Thomas was 5-over par after seven holes and Cupples was 6-over par after nine holes.
